Job Description

Probationary Special Education Teacher (15:1 Academic Skills) for 2025-2026 Middle School (Grades 5-6)

Start Date: September 1, 2025

The educator will be responsible for teaching groups of students with a range of disabilities.  The selected candidate will develop, monitor and adjust instruction to promote the growth of our students which includes their intellectual, emotional, social and physical well-being.  Additionally, the successful candidate must demonstrate unquestionable integrity, understand the value of culturally responsive instructional practices and have a firm belief in the potential of all students.

Job Qualifications

General Requirements:

Our ideal candidate should have:

  • NYS Permanent or Professional Special Education or NYS Students with Disabilities Certification Grades 1-6.
  • Candidates who posses other teaching certificates, in addition to special education are preferred.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Familiarity and experience providing instruction for students with disabilities in the self-contained setting working to meet grade level expectations.
  • Effective communication skills to engage students, parents, colleagues and the school community as a whole.

Preferred skills of the ideal candidate:

  • Demonstrated skill in teaching students with disabilities in separate and/or inclusive settings.
  • Knowledge of multi-disciplinary instructional technologies, research-based interventions for teaching academics as well as behavior, and strategies for collecting data and monitoring academic/behavioral progress.
  • Knowledge of/experience with developing and implementing positive behavioral supports, behavior intervention plans (BIPs), and functional behavioral assessments (FBAs).  
  • Experience with classroom management, IEP goal development and progress monitoring.
  • Able to lead classroom staff and collaborate with other members of the special education team.
  • Fully trained in crisis intervention/response such as Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS).

Benefits and Salary:

According to SCTA Contract - at least Schedule 1, Step 1 or $56,546.00 depending on experience and transcripts.  Competitive benefits.
