Job Description

POSITION TITLE: Secretary I (10-months + 1 week per year position)

REPORTING TO: Building Principal

HOURS: 7.0 hours per day, Monday - Friday.

CURRENT LOCATION:   Saddlewood Elementary School

STARTING SALARY: $32,309.00 per CSEA Contract. Benefits per CSEA Contract.

START DATE: January 5, 2026

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The work involves responsibility for independently performing complex clerical operations and administrative support tasks for a unit in a Division. Incumbents spend a substantial amount of time operating a personal computer and the rest of the time on routine administrative tasks to ensure the efficient workflow of the office. The work also involves responsibility for the entry and retrieval of information using software on a computer and using a computer to produce printed material such as letters, memoranda and forms. Incumbents work under general supervision receiving detailed instructions only where policies have not been determined. This class differs from that of Secretary II by the increased time spent on operating software and the more limited scope of duties and decision-making responsibilities. Does related work as required.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates will not have to take an exam for this title. This is a Hiring Emergency Limited Placement (HELP) Program-designated title. The HELP Program is a temporary program designed to help local government employers address current staffing issues. Traditionally, the titles filled under the HELP Program required job candidates to compete in a competitive exam to be considered for employment. For the duration of the program, this title will be classified as non-competitive and categorized as a “HELP Program” position. At the close of the program, this position will revert to competitive class status. Employees occupying positions filled through the HELP Program will be granted competitive class status without the need to participate in a competitive exam.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Graduation from an accredited college or university or with at least an Associate’s degree and one (1) year of clerical experience which involved the operation of a computer for word-processing, database or spreadsheet applications; OR,
  2. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience as defined in section A.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Good knowledge of modern office terminology, procedures, equipment and business English;
  • Ability to handle routine administrative details independently;
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet and databases at an acceptable rate of accuracy and speed;
  • Ability to prepare and maintain program records and routine reports;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
  • Ability to organize and maintain office files;
  • Ability to collect information from various sources for program operations.
